Why Compost?
Why Compost? You Can’t Seriously be Asking this Question!
Forgive me for being so blunt, but one will clearly see that the answers to this question far outweigh the possible impropriety of the previous comment. Composting is an important catalyst to which we must give grave consideration, especially in the light of our past, and for some of us, our present actions. Our care for the environment, our families, and ourselves dictates unequivocally our action in the matter of, “Why compost?”
Care for the Environment
As citizens of this planet, we have been endowed with a great personal responsibility to care for the environment in which we live. Although so many of us have taken this responsibility lightly, the consequences of our actions are now evident throughout the world. Take, for example, the huge amount of garbage floating around aimlessly in both the Eastern and Western Pacific Garbage Patches. Then, of course, are the other losses of resources and life evident due to commercialization and to our own poor choices (oil spills, deforestation, and chemical pollutants). Recycling and composting are the first steps in reversing our choices and in finally taking responsibility for our actions.
Care for our Families
With such a great loss of planet resources, it is difficult to imagine raising a family in which our children will not be in some way affected by the consequences of our terrible decisions. Yet, so often we have ignored, denied, and even mocked the pending consequences for our actions. In many ways, these consequences will not only be coming back to haunt our children, but also are even now beginning to haunt us through the frighteningly widespread occurrence of cancer. As if that were not enough, simply beginning an in-depth study of the MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheets) available on topsoils, fertilizers, and pesticides, would demonstrate the toxins to which we have been exposed. Not only will composting affect our environment in reduction of waste, but also will assist in preventing the production of further harmful substances that could be disseminated into the environment. Your choice to compost will improve the health of your family by preventing pesticides into your garden, fertilizers onto your lawn, or contamination into your local water supply.
Care for Yourself
Composting is a protective measure against the pollutants that are already freely traveling through our environment. By choosing to be part of the solution, and not the problem, you will have, simply put,
- prevented harmful pollutants,
- reduced personal waste, and
- chosen to care for yourself, others, and the environment.
Congratulations on making the choice to compost for the good of humanity! Thank you for now being able to answer the question of why we all should compost, and for freely sharing this information with others around you who can also make a difference!
